Is the Mac os built on Unix like ubuntu is only it's free.
I'm not sure what question you're asking, but.....
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution, like many others. It is based on free
(as in freedom, not as in beer) software.
Mac OS X is not a Linux/UNIX distribution. It has a UNIX-derived kernel
at its core, and some parts of it are free. The overall package,
however, is quite commercial and not free.
A quick description of what Mac OS X is:
- A Microkernel (based on the IBM Microkernel, based on Mach 3.0, IIRC)
- A BSD UNIX-derived open source kernel (called Darwin) running over the
microkernel.
- Two non-free, non-open API layers that run over the microkernel and
UNIX layer:
- Carbon - a set of C-based APIs based on the classic Mac OS APIs
- Cocoa - a set of Objective-C-based APIs based on the NextStep
APIs.
- Three non-free, non-open GUI layers:
- Quartz - for 2D graphics
- Open GL - for 3D graphics
- QuickTime - for multimedia
- A PDF-based metafile system
- Many bundled applications, some free, some not-free, including:
- The Apache web server
- SAMBA (for Windows-compatible file sharing)
- AppleShare-compatible file sharing
- The Safari web browser
- All kinds of userful utilities
- An X11 server
- Developer tools (a proprietary environment wrapped around the free
gcc compiler and gdb debugger, plus libraries, headers,
documentation and sample code.)
