    (1) You are right about the CRT, and the fix is probably this, which you
must apply *before* attempting to upgrade. You will probably need to
upgrade to 9.1 before you can apply the fix. Make sure this is the one
    that applies to your model.

    (2) I am pretty sure that you can NOT boot up from a USB-based CD.
However, all is not lost. Borrow another computer, connect it to yours
with firewire, boot up yours in firewire target mode, and you can
install Mac OS X from that other computer.

    (3) Don't install 10.2. It's atrocious. You're just opening yourself up
to a world of problems. There is a reason why there are system updates.
    Install Panther or Tiger.

Matt said what I was going to , but likely in fewer words.

You will not be able to boot your iMac from USB.

Make sure you've done any and all firmware updates BEFORE installing OS
    X.

256 Megs is bare bones. If you can go to 512 or 1 gig, do it. It DOES
    make a difference.

At least install 10.3, not 10.2. If you don't have 10.3, check the
resellers or eBay, or email me. I have a retail version of Panther,
totally legit, original CDs, that I can sell.

A helpful correspondent points out to me that the iMac 350 lacks
firewire (I misread MacTracker on this point). Sorry about that. At this
point I am forced to throw up my hands. Unless you want to remove the
hard disk and install onto it using an external firewire enclosure from
another computer, your best bet may be to see about having the internal
slot fixed. For what that will cost you, though, it might be worth while
to consider another machine; I see an iMac DV (one step up from yours)
with Tiger and enough RAM for $130 on eBay. m.
