dollars for this and it is still sealed in the box. Never been opened.

After my 17" G4 Powerbook has been stolen, I need a replacement within one month latest (arriving) I should say.

Switching to Intel I'd loose Classic (FrameMaker), Final Cut Express (temporarily?) and Virtual PC (but there is dual boot - http://onmac.net/). And a smaller screen, and no Firewire 800.

I'd gain speed (eg Osirix, medical imaging).

I can get the MacBook Pro at considerably better price than other options (ca -20%) from the university.

Any other thoughts, experiences, recommendations or educated guesses of upcoming hardware that might influence my decision?

If you can hold out, I suspect Apple will offer a 17" MacBook Pro within the next few months, provided you can do without FrameMaker or find a package for OS X that does the same thing.

    Thank you all for comments.
I decided to take the plunge and switch to Intel (not the least because
of the good prices from the university). If worst comes, I still have a G4/450 web server machine. I cannot wait more than one month.
As for FrameMaker currently I do assume it's dead on Mac OS X, Adobe
never produced a Mac OS X version even though the program started on
Unix machines back in 1988 - using Pages as a replacement (not for long
and complex documents, but it is close enough for dayly use - and surprisingly similar in many aspects).
As for the hardware - my 17" PB (Oct2005) went through repair 3 times already before being stolen - too bad I had it repaired for the thief
(had logic board, hard disk and DVD drive all replaced - nasty bus
errors that Apple support could not diagnose over the phone, nor Apple Hardware Test - in the end I had to start in single user mode and run
fsck on the disk to prove it - if not for my electrical engineering background and unix sysadmin days I'd probably still search for the software incompatibility, that's what Apple care said before I could
tell them the outcome of fsck).
For Virtual PC I'll try www.kberg.ch/q as per recommendation of Sander Tekelenburg.
I should get my MacBook Pro by 20 April and will report major issues
back here - hopefully there are none, then I'll happily report that as well.

I have a MacBook Pro and so does a friend. My friend's MBP is the 2Ghz
model and she had Apple max out the RAM. Mine is the 1.83Ghz model, but
its the stock model with the standard 80GB hard drive and 512MB RAM.
Both of us like our new MBPs a lot.

In fact, I just installed Apple's new Boot Camp utility and Windows XP
Pro SP2 on my MBP last night and its working out great. Now, I have the
best of both worlds in one light little machine!

Funny how your name seems to change. Just a little while ago you were
selling "Digital Italia" for $550 in San Antonio ..... that's also over
$200 lower than the list. Another "gift" that fell off the back of a

Yeah, we're all going to rush right out and buy a "never used" laptop,
from some guy over the internet, who gets hostile when questioned about
    the source of the product.

What you're selling doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't you return it to

No conspiracy theory here. Just a simple premonition that someone who

If any of you were in front of me, I would show you just what kind of
thief I am. First, I would smack you in the fuck'n mouth, then I

friends watch. Then, I would give each one of them a slap. Then,
maybe I would leave and go rob a subway sandwich shop for a little
bite to eat. What jerkoffs you all really are. Trust me and be happy
nobody tried to meet me to buy this fuck'n thing.

You try that on me and you'll wind up in the hospital with a concussion, lacerations, and singing soprano.

Oh. Wait. He was _serious_?! Damn, that's even funnier!
