My old 1995 Digital laser printer has a problem.
Prior to replacing it, I did a bit of due diligence to see if it was
something easy to fix. (stuck sensor etc).
Digital had a MacOS config utility called NPManage which used Appletalk
to talk to the printer.
I tried with Sheepshaver, but couldn't get it to see my printer.
Apparently only "slirp" work for the ethernet interface and you need
some sort of proxy server.
So, I booted my G3 server with 10.4 and the NPManage utility started the
OS-9 emulator and worked perfectly. Alas, it turns out it only manages
the network card on the printer and not the printer itself.
But having booted the old G3, I had a bit of fun and Tried a "Software
update" on it.
Not only did it connect, but offered me 3 updates :-)
Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 9
Quicktime 7.6.4
Security Update 2009.005
So Just for fun I installed and it worked !
Pretty neat that Apple has kept these software update servers and still
feeds that very old stuff !
And man, that G3 is noisy compared to my trash can. That is definitely
an area where much has improved over the years is fan noise. (I keep
the G3 because it has Diskette drive, the ZIP drive and the Classic environment emulator which today showed it could do stuff that
Sheepshaver coudn't.
