I visit a site in Safari. Up pops a window, with Safari logo,

JavaScript
You are using Netscape. This site is best experienced in Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.
Now I know I am using Safari, not Netscape (which I don't even have installed) or IE (which I do have). What is going on?
Safari has the ability to 'pretend' it's Mozilla 1.1, Netscape 7.0,
Netscape 6.2.2, Netscape 4.79, Mac MSIE 5.22, Windows MSIE 6.0, &
Konqueror 3. If you have the Debug meny enabled you can choose which
browser you are emulating, or have it 'Automatically Chosen.'
To enable the Debug menu, you need to know the magic incantation, or
easier yet, grab a copy of Safari Enhancer, or a similar utility.
