Hi Folks-
I'm trying to figure out whether it's time to exchange my 1.25G Dual
Processor PowerMac G4 (mirrored Drive bays) w/ 1GB RAM for the new
intel Mac mini. I'm not using the expansion features of the PowerMac substantially, except for an additional 320GB hard drive. When I got
it, I wanted a reasonably fast dual processor for running Virtual PC occasionally. The G5 Powermacs had just come out when I bought it (so
this was the last generation of PowerMac G4s), so the G4 price had
dropped and it seemed a bargian. I've always been very happy with it.
However, I have a feeling that, except for the video, the new DuoCore
Mac mini is actually just as capable, and now I can run Windows with
either Boot Camp or Parallels. I'm thinking of selling the PowerMac
and buying a Mac mini and NewerTechnology mini-stack (
http://www.newertech.com/ministack). My guess is that my sales price
will be approximately +/- $150 the buy price of the mini.
Does this sound like an accurate assessment, or am I missing a key
advantage of the G4 or disadvantage of the Mini. Would a CoreSolo mini
be just as good?
My main uses are:
email, surfing, powerpoint, iapps, occasional games (age of empires,
etc.), project management software, personal finance, statistical
software (SPSS, Stata, DeltaGraph). Infrequent photoshop or
moviemaking stuff (as an occasional hobby). Ocassional VirtualPC use.
All advice appreciated!
Cheers,
Bruce
PS: I must admit, I always thought the G4 PowerMac cases were very
attractive, though the mini has it's charm too.
