• "Running Boot Camp"- The Real Question is Apple fazing itself out - or What is Apple?

"Running Boot Camp"- The Real Question is Apple fazing itself out - or
    What is Apple?

I have been an Apple guy since 1985 or so and The Apple IIe.

    Now my problem is this:
    Software:
Mac Software is really not "Apple" (as Copland would have been), but
    Unix. Or is it?
    Hardware:
Mac hardware is no longer an alternative development track from Intel.
    Or is it?

Aside from the egomaniacal and annoying "i" product identification
project (iPod, iMac, iThink therefore iAM) - and the stock surge
    (deservedly) due to Ipod schtick...

...what is Apple? I can't help but think moving to Intel and Bootcamp
is "Breaking it to us Gently - and "sooner rather than later" when
    iMUST COMPLY.

Apple is a hardware company that happens to make a stunning OS.

Mac hardware is no longer an alternative development track from Intel.
    Or is it?

Intel only make the processors - Apple designs the hardware.

Breaking WHAT exactly? The fact that Mactels can run Windoze? So what?

but what does it matter? If it's used well then who cares? Macs somehow managed to survive using hard disks, just like intel PCs did, graphics
cards, electricity. So where is the beef?

This one always gets me. Maybe nobody knows how to spell it because you
don't see it in print very often, and it's a relatively older phrase.

The word is "phase" not "faze." Faze is used in "that doesn't faze me"
when you're saying something is not a bother or shock to you. Of course,
most of the time when I see someone using that saying, they write it
    "that doesn't phase me."

The Apple corporation has put out more winning hardware and software
than losers, (I bought the Apple IIgs just before they canned the Apple
II line and the Mac Portable...no one remembers that but me.). I have
been a Mac advocate since joining the Orange Apple Users group in about
    1986.

But I am not made of cash. I have seen my favorite word processor, WordPerfect for the Mac, (which believe me still does the things a
writer needs, without the bloat,... and no Apple Product currently
matchs it), Die - Why? Because of the shrinking market base, and look
at Adobe's treatment of Mac. I can't live without Adobe and I will
never be able to buy a whoe suite of programs again if I have to jump
    ship.

Are you a gamer? I go to the Eugene Mac Store and am glad I don't play computer games. Who still writes FOR the Mac instead of lagging
    versions for the Mac.

Apple should be more than a computer for the well-off folks. It used
to be the computer for everybody, teachers, musicians, and people who
could actually use the damn thing. I understand why someone who looks
at how advanced and well engineered the Mac is thinks a person with
concerns is less than a Winner- but being the CPU Cadillac ain't
enough. And being The Alternitive to the Microsoft Machine isn't a
    winning card anymore.

Now days people buy a Lexus or some such when they get rich.

Actually, it hasn't expired yet, although Corel left it for dead. A plug-in indexes files for Spotlight, and everything else works fine in classic. Free enhancements give it the best outlining on a personal computer, the best version-tracking, bibliography/reference management, and regular expression search. I've heard of a few emulators in development to support the Intel chip.

It was far more for well-off folks in that glowing past you seem to
remember. Back then, it was _really_ expensive. Get real; do some
    counting.

    It used
to be the computer for everybody,

Only in terms of image and usability. It was _expensive_ back then.

Relatively speaking, a Mac has never been as cheap as it is today, and
even in absolute numbers it is cheaper than ever. My Mac Plus cost the equivalent of around $2,000 in 1987 with a 40% student discount. Not
even factoring in inflation, today I get a very good portable for under
half that (iBook) and an excellent iMac 20" well under the same sum.
Then I haven't even started on the hardware included in today's offering
vs. yesteryear's, and not even mentioned the huge amount of bundled
software that wasn't there, and a vastly superior OS.

In short: The Mac of today is far more "for the rest of us" in terms of affordability and usefulness out of the box than five, ten or fifteen
    years ago.

OK - quite a number of wintel boxes out there are even cheaper. There
will always be cheaper boxes, just like there will be cheaper cars - and
from the same sources: Korean and Chinese companies, some witth US or
European management, most not, that don't need to use a dime for R&D,
just play copycat and use the cheapest available building materials. And
what you get is c-h-e-a-p. Real cheap.

    Just thought I'd mention it.
