• HELP! "Permissions denied"

Help! Something went wrong with my local network connection. I can no
longer connect to other computers on my local network via WiFi. I used
to be able to connect from PowerBook (OS 10.3.9) with Airport card to a
G3 (OS 9.2.2) connected to a Belkin 7230-tt4 router. Now I get "no
response from Server" when attempting to connect with IP address or
    computer name.

If I ping address I get "Permissions denied". Have no idea where to even look... let alone resolve permissions issue. Network seems to be
configured properly and PB User is allowed Read/Write on G3.

Print server pings and works OK which printing goes thru WiFi connection
to print server etherneted to router.

My gut feel is that something that one would have to use Terminal to
fix. Unfortunately... this is an area that I know little about.

Someone please HELP. I need my connection back... Jim

Has someone changed the config on the WiFi access point so that your MAC address is no longer known? Or have you changed computers and not
entered your new Mac's MAC address into the WiFi access point?

not that I know of... or not intentionally anyway. Are you referring to
a config of a MAC address setting in the router or in one... or both of
the computers connected to the router (one Wifi and one ethernet?

The problem started with a Belkin 7230-4 and Belkin sent me a
replacement 7230-tt4 which has exactly the same problem. The initial
problem was that I could not connect to any other computers on my small network by name but could connect by IP address. One thing that I have
done (from a suggestion) is to add entries in the hosts file for each of
my computers that I want to connect to ie: "192.168.22.88 G3PowerPC". Initially this allowed me to connect to server computer by name but was
only one direction... I could not see OS X computer in OS 9.2.2 Chooser.
Now neither having the entries in the OS X hosts file nor taking them
    out makes any difference... Jim

Sounds like (on the G3) either file sharing has been turned off or your
Users & Groups settings have been changed.

Yes, that's what I was wondering. I figured that if you're using WiFi,
you've got to have some kind of security. The best available that I'm
aware of in normal equipment is MAC address-specific, so...

It is possible this is yet another manifestation of the "Stalling DNS Epidemic". It has all the symptoms. I would suggest entering your ISPs DNS address in the Network Prefpanel.

John... thanks. I don't even get that far. I know it sounds like
something in the G3 has changed but I don't see anything.

I hit a brick wall saying server is nowhere to be found, server failed
to respond or it times out with a -36 error (operation could not be
completed because some data could not be read or written)... Jim

Thanks for the responses. Only my problem is strictly LAN. I don't even
have anything plugged into the router cable/dsl connection port.

The instant I push the connect button on the "Connect To Server" window,
I get a "cannot be found on network" or "no response from server"
depending on whether I'm using computer name or IP address when trying
    to connect... Jim
