• Time Machine fails

I have a 2007 MacBook running Lion. I have tried to TimeMachine the
computer twice, once with a flash drive and another time with a regular external hard drive (MyPassport). TM gets about 80% thru 50 gb when I
get the error message and a failed back up. Of course, it wont tell me
which files are causing the problems.

    Any fixes?

Can you just copy the entire harddrive to the external drive and put it
on an iMac and have it run OK?

    Thanks
    Lyndon

I'd certainly run Disk Utility first aid on it

Google 'time machine buddy'. It's a rather old piece of software which
will tell you which files are causing the problem, and I *think* it
    still worked on Lion.

From what I recall of this era, an errant .DS_Store file was often the
cause of this sort of problem, and deleting it would fix things.

Thanks for the info, but neither version 1.02 or 1.08 of time machine
buddy would be installed into the dashboard.

No ".DS_Store" file seems to be on my computer.

Files names which begin with a leading dot (.) are invisible. Not
being able to "see" invisibile files in the Finder, does not mean they
    are not there.

    $ locate .DS_Store | grep -c .

Yep. If you're using any version of MacOS X or macOS 11, then .DS_Store
files definitely exist because the Finder uses them to store
    information about each folder.
