• Remove Item From Pages' Recents List

    From Wade Garrett@wade@cooler.net to comp.sys.mac.system on Thursday, April 15, 2021 11:48:45
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.mac.system

When you right-click on the Pages icon in the Dock, a pop-up list of the
most recent 10-15 documents used appears.

Any way to remove one or more of them from that list?

Yes, but it’s not very intuitive.

Open the app and go to File > Open Recents. Select to clear that menu.

The Dock is showing the same one.

This method removes all the documents which is very helpful. Do you know

To do that you would need to edit a plist file. Generally not worth it —
but if you want I can dig into it.

Or maybe there is a better answer someone else knows.

Just checked and found this discussion on it — for an older version.

Just open up a few other documents and the "unwanted" one will drop off

Really wish there was an easier way. I have used Macs long enough to remember Classic Mac were the "recent items", at least for the system, were saved as aliases in a folder. Was very easy to toss specific ones then. Ah, progress.

Consider that clearing the recent list is something that nearly no one
ever wants to do. And for most Mac users, there is absolutely no reason
to ever do it for any reason at all, unless you are so foolish as to
share accounts with people or are a psycho crazy stalker like my cousin
who checked everything her husband used the computer for every single
day and forbade multiple accounts on the computer. But you can't argue
crazy and, thankfully, most people are not crazy. She is though, and
    refuses to take her meds.

There are many "features" I rarely use on the Mac. Only recently have I
begun using "App Exposé" with a 3-finger swipe down. This displays a
row of miniatures across the bottom of documents I've recently used.
I've rarely used the "Open Recent..." option but now, surprisingly, I
find I use App Exposé more and more frequently.

I'm sure it uses the same list as in "Open Recent..." and
right-clicking in the dock. And further, I assume they vanish from all
    such options when cleared.

There is no reason to share an account on a Mac with anyone. In fact, it
means that you either cannot customize it to your preferences, or that
you have to agree with the other user. Creating a new account takes a
minute or two, or using the guest account takes no time at all.

    LOL!

Say my wife is working on a list of possible birthday presents for me. Then
she wants help with her computer, even with files she has been working with in Pages. Would be nice if she could easily hide it from me.

She could, of course, just not make the file "Birthday Ideas for my Wonderful Husband" and I would never know. Or just rename it then rename it back. :)

Or share the computer with someone else and don't want to tempt them to eavesdrop on your letters, stories, or journals.

It is not uncommon for me to use my wife's or my kids' computers to help them with some issue. Generally they are right there, but not always. And I work on other people's computers. They might not want me to see some file they have been working on... even to see the name. That is completely fair and reasonable.

There are many "features" I rarely use on the Mac. Only recently have I begun using "App Exposé" with a 3-finger swipe down. This displays a
row of miniatures across the bottom of documents I've recently used.
I've rarely used the "Open Recent..." option but now, surprisingly, I
find I use App Exposé more and more frequently.

I almost never use the App Exposé feature, but use the recently opened (from the Dock and from the File menu) often.

I did just recently add a hot key to make the App Exposé easier for me to remember, but still do not tend to use it. When I want a different window / document in an app I tend to hit Command+~ to switch through windows. Still good to have a visual. And everyone has different preferences -- happy Apple provides choice.

I'm sure it uses the same list as in "Open Recent..." and
    right-clicking in the dock.

With a quick test: yes, it seems to.

And further, I assume they vanish from all
    such options when cleared.

    Yup.

Classic Mac were the "recent items", at least for the system, were saved as
aliases in a folder. Was very easy to toss specific ones then. Ah,
    progress.

There is no reason to share an account on a Mac with anyone. In fact, it means that you either cannot customize it to your preferences, or that
you have to agree with the other user. Creating a new account takes a
minute or two, or using the guest account takes no time at all.

There are reasons someone might use your computer on your account through -- I use my wife's and my kids', as well as some neighbors and some clients, quite often. Usually the person is there -- or with COVID and non-family it is usually remotely -- but if someone wants to hide the fact they have a file
from me I would be happy to show them how.
