• Mail App in Big Sur... trash disappeared

    From J Burns@burns@nospam.com to comp.sys.mac.system on Saturday, April 17, 2021 10:08:18
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.mac.system

In Mail, I wanted to check my trash before deleting it. I have three
accounts. I see that All Inboxes, All Sent, and All Drafts have been put
under Favorites. Each can be viewed as one list or opened to show what's
    under each account.

Trash used to be like that. Now it's empty. Eventually I found my three accounts, grayed out, at the bottom of the list. Each can be opened to
show Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk, and Trash. The first three have the same contents as above, at the top of the list, where Junk and Trash have disappeared.

I'd rather have Trash conveniently near the top, and have the option of viewing all Trash in one listing. How can I change it back?

You should be able to create a Smart Mailbox, defined to include all
messages in the Trash for any account.

All Trash is in the top section on Mail in 11.2 and 11.3 on my machines,
    right under All Junk

You can control what is shown by hovering over the word "Favorites" in
the side bar an d clicking "+"

To remove the items from that section, drag them out.

You can also put specific mailboxes and Smart Mailboxes into the
    favorite section.

Thanks. Under the Message menu, Move To shows All Trash and All Junk, in
their usual location. However, they do not appear in the sidebar.

Is it time to rebuild everything? Is that a job for Onyx?

Something else is wrong. My power bill arrived in an inbox early this
morning. I left it unopened so that the "unopened" flag would be a
    reminder that it needed attention.

Later this morning, I discovered that the All Trash folder was missing.
There was a trash folder under "On My Mac," and it was empty.

I tried Safe Start. That didn't help. A few minutes ago, I found that
the bill had been moved to On My Mac Trash and was no longer flagged as unopened. To get that result, I would have had to open it, move it from
the inbox to another folder, and delete it. I know I didn't to that.

I moved the bill back to the inbox. Then I deleted some old messages
that weren't in an inbox. They went to On My Mac Trash, as expected.

My next thought was to see if Disk Repair would turn up a problem. Now
I'm confused. The options are a 15 GB snapshot called
com.apple.update..., and the Data volume. I imagine a problem in system
files could cause Mail.app to misbehave. Where are system files?

The first time I tried it, nothing happened. Now I tried it again and it worked. I guess I didn't hover long enough the first time. Thanks, Lewis
    and David.

I upgraded to Big Sur recently. Did it make All Trash and All Junk
    invisible?

I still don't know how an unopened bill in an inbox became an opened
bill in On My Mac Trash.
