So, over the lunch period at work I've been watching the Apple April Event. >>>
Just saw the bit about the M1 iMac having an external power supply and
I was booing and hissing ... until I saw it also hosts the Ethernet
cable.
Nice. That will reduce the cable bloat at the back.
Even less cable bloat "thanks" to having fewer ports on the back ...
especially at the cheap end where there are only two! You may need to
factor in the cost of an external hub.
I won't be buying this iteration of the iMac (most likely in any case).
A higher end one with more memory. Such will likely have more (or at
least 4 connectors) on it.
The newly announced iMac comes with two ports (two USB4/Thunderbolt) on
the cheaper US$1299 model and four ports (two USB3 and two
USB4/Thunderbolt) on the US$1499 and US$1699 models. These are on the
back.
Both come with a headphone socket on the side.
The high end models also have an Ethernet socket, but it's on the
external power brick with the wire combined into the magnetic power
cable. The low end model can be custom-built to include Ethernet.
Both come with 8GB RAM and can be custom-build upgraded to 16GB.

I already have USB 3 hub with 8(?) ports not in use at present, but
don't like for external storage to be off of a hub.
Time will sort this out - I would guess by the fall the next level iMac
will be out.
The "next level" may possibly be the long-rumoured 30-inch iMac.
Whether that this year or next year using a new CPU (along with the Mac
Pro) is a different question though, as is if it will be called "iMac"
or "iMac Pro".
