some other way to get it working again.

If your speaker volume happens to be set to zero you will not hear them.
    It's worth checking that.

Output volume is not set to zero or muted, volume out is set to SoundSticks. This setup always worked fine in the past. Something has happened deep down inside me eMac.

I've had the same problem since 10.1. It must be some software problem. Maybe my Microsoft keyboard or mouse
software conflict. If I boot into OS 9.xx the next reboot into 10.xx will sound the chimes but the following boots into
10.xx will not sound the startup chimes. All other sounds are normal.

The startup chord plays only through the built-in audio controller --
the built-in speaker(s) or a device connected to the analog audio output (headphone jack) -- not through the SoundSticks that require system
    software to be loaded.

You are correct, I apologise. I checked the sound in the system preferences, the SoundSticks were selected, I selected the Built-in audio controller and found the output volume was set to zero and the mute button ticked, after changing these settings the chime worked like a charm on restart. Why I
never noticed the chime plays through the built in speakers and not the
    Sticks I don't know.

Thanks very much for your help
