[responding to my querying as to why I would want auto-activation of fonts]

Well, James, perhaps _you_ can remember exactly which of your 1558 faces
you used in each and every document you produce. Most people can't.
Without font auto-activation, one must open the doc, read the warning
about what fonts can't be found and are going to be replaced with Courier, then close the doc, activate the fonts required for the doc, reopen the
doc, AND hope that the doc hasn't been somehow corrupted during this
dance. (Hey, with Adobe, all things are possible.)

All 1558 of my faces are normally enabled, so there is no need in InDesign to address the issue of missing fonts. Whenever I am creating a document in InDesign I might open Font Book to explore my font library so that font choices can be made. Once such choices are made they are included in styles
so that a chosen font can be used in multiple places in the document without having to resort to the font menu.

Auto-activation gets around all this. Try out Linotype Font Explorer X. It works very well, has auto-activation for Adobe CS, does everything Font
Book does and a whole lot more, AND it's FREE.

This comes across to me a bit like "auto-activation cures a problem I don't have!" But I'll be fair and take another look at Font Explorer X after which
    I will report back.

I'm curious as to what the penalty is in having my full font library active
at the same time. I have no awareness of any slowness in either InDesign or
in Font Book or in any other font-centric application.

Many hanks for taking the time to reply!
