Hello.
Is it me or does mac OS Big Sur v11.4's Archive Utility app cannot
extract *.7z files correctly?
I got a huge 141 MB 7z file (can't share it to the public) with a WAV
file inside. It was extracted without errors, but none of the players (Windows' and third parties too) could play this 250 MB WAV file after extracting it. I tried The Unarchiver app to extract the same 7z file's
WAV file and play it. No problems. What the heck?
According to file command, it says "... 7-zip archive data, version
0.4". Does Big Sur v11.4's Archive Utility app have issues with *.7z
files? :/
Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

What did you use to create it? Are any specific options set in that app
for 7z archives?
I uploaded it to http://zimage.com/~ant/temp/MP3toWAVsample.7z (38.3
MB). Please try extracting with mac OS Big Sur v11.4's Archive Utility
app and playing its WAV file.
On both of these systems:
* macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina)
* macOS 11.2.3 (Big Sur)
Archive Utility: archive gets extracted but is not a proper WAV file and cannot be played.
The Unarchiver: archive gets correctly extracted and can be played.

Same, but it's not the default. I just use it as a backup for things
Archive Utility has trouble with.
What trouble did you run into with it? This was my first time from someone's 7-Zipped WAV file and then doing the same with my own WAV
file.
It's been so long I don't recall. It was probably just some archive
format Apple's utility doesn't support.

Why would you think that 7z files can be extracted by the mac's
archive utility?
Archive Utility can indeed can extract most 7z files.
It fails to do it often enough that it's not worth it.
I've done it frequently, and just tested it out on an old MS DOS
6.22.7z archive. It worked fine.
And when it fails, it doesn???t even tell you it failed, so you have
useless files that were expanded. And if you don't check them right
away, assuming that no error means everything is good, then you can
easily end up with useless files and not archive.
And support for 8z at all is pretty recent, right? I know the Archive
Utility didn't use to support 7z files at all. But then again, it also
had issues with some zip files many years ago.

I just right click on the file in Windows Explorer and its defaults with the 64-bit 7-Zip program from https://www.7-zip.org. I tried add to archive manually with its options (https://justpaste.it/img/69bd8aa11a51f92afa0b0d57ded0a00d.gif). Both
were in my over decade old, updated 64-bit W7 HPE SP1 PC.
Ok, thanks.

Thank you for reproducing it on your end. :) Wow, even Catalina. BTW,
how come you're not on v11.4 for Big Sur?
Inertia, mostly. : ) I have several Macs of various models here at home,
and while some run Big Sir, others run Catalina, mostly because I
haven't yet taken the time to verify that all of the stuff I have
installed is fully compatible with Big Sur. As an example, one of the headless Mac minis in my server closet is still running Catalina because
it runs several critical Docker containers that must continue running
24/7 without issue, and I haven't had time to test them in Big Sur. I'll
get around to it eventually - no rush.

I never had problems with zip files. What issues were there?
