After startup, I often see a second "Utilities" folder appear when I
click on the original in the Apps folder. Trashing the Finder .plist
solves the problem, but no maintenance I've done has prevented it from recurring after future restarts. Does anyone have an idea about what's going on and how to fix it?

a virus. that's what effected your font also.

It looks like you were right. I did some checking with ClamXav, and
found a virus called HTML.Phishing.Auction-269 in my user level library.
It was in the Firefox cache folder, which is odd because I very rarely
use Firefox and keep the browser updated. Does anyone have any more info
on this bug? A google search turned up mostly Italian language sites.

This is the first Mac ( or at least Mac-affecting) virus I have caught
in 14 years of being a Mac user--and I am security conscious.

    Thanks for your insight.
