• Question: updating my username and other security questions

I'm a long-time Mac user, but recently made the jump to OS X (yeah, I
know it was a long time coming). Anyway, when I entered by user
information, I put in my name without thinking about it, and was
surprised to find that there was now a directory with my name (in my
case, with middle initial and all). I was shocked to find my name also
appeared on an informal network with another ibook, as the name of my
    computer (w/ model and all).

Call me paranoid, but I was uncomfortable with that. I don't like the
idea of being in a public place and being that easily identified by
other people. Is there any way that I can change my user name (and
presumably, the name of the directory that goes with it)? System is OS X 10.4.6.

Also, I've enabled the firewall. Is there anything else I can do to
better secure my Mac? Is Little Snitch worth the effort and cost?

Create a new user with the name that you want; make sure you give it administrative privileges. Change the short name of that user to what
you want; the directory will have the same name as the user's short
name. Migrate all the folders and files from the old user's directory
to the new user's directory. (you may have to do this after the next
    step rather than before it)

Log out from the old user, and log in to the new user's account. then
    delete the old user.

Not easily. Easiest way: create a /new/ admin account with a /new/
name, copy your files from the old to the new, then delete the old
    account.

Thanks to both of you who replied. It seems simple enough, if a bit
    cumbersome.

Follow up question from a unix newbie: what's the best way to migrate
the folders and files? Should I just point-and-drag, or is there some
command line way that would be better to do this?

    Just drag them.

    Thanks. I've bookmarked the site.

But I think I'll go with the other method mentioned here on the ng. It
looks safer, and since the guy who posted the solution in the URL has
never tested it, I'd rather not... (-:

In addition to what others have told you, you can also change the
externally visible name of your computer by going to System
Preferences -> Sharing, where you can edit this name.
