• Mysterious software updates interfering with appplications

    Greetings:

I have run into multiple problems with my G5 Imac 1.8 GHZ, purchased
    in 12/04.

The problems began when I tried to run Classic.

I tried to open some programs that only run under OS 9 e.g. Word 5.1
and got the message "Classic cannot find an OS 9 system folder on the
    start up disk to use."

I then tried opening Classic through System preferences, and got the
message: "You do not have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. Install Mac OS 9.1 or later." My understanding is that I
cannot install OS 9 on this machine, and that I can only run OS 9
    programs under Classic.

I then opened: HD/System/Library/Classic, and found that the latter
    folder was empty.

I then tried an Archive and Install reinstallation of OS 10.3.9,
followed by a software update: no effect.

Then I noticed the following problem:

When I restart, the window that comes up is the MS Office 2004 Test DriveVersion User Agreement in Swedish. (My machine is set to use
    English).

I then started up using the install disk, and ran disk repair, which
indicated the disk had been repaired, but did not actually state if
    there were any problems.

When I tried to run repair permissions, it ran briefly, and then I got
an error message stating "The Disk Management Utility has lost its
connection with the Disk Management Tool. Quit the Utility and
restart." I did this and the same thing happened again.

I trashed two programs I recently installed (Safari Enhancer and Flip 4
Mac). This did not fix the problem.

Then I checked my System profile, and my applications folder, and found
that on April 15, Appleworks 6 was downloaded in fifteen different
languages; that Quicken 2004 was downloaded, and that MS Office 2004
for Mac Test Drive was also downloaded on the same date.

I presume this in part explains why the MS Office 2004 Test Drive
Version User Agreemen comes up in Swedish

Much older versions of all these programs are on my HDD (i.e. about
seven years older), but I've never received updates for them before.
I'm guessing that they must have come in an Apple software update,
although why non-Apple software such as Quicken and MS Office would
come in an Apple software update, I don't know.

I alos I don't know why Apple would give me a free copy of Appleworks
    6: it's out of character.

I'm thinking of scrapping Appleworks, Quicken and MS Office Test
Drive, then do an OS Archive and reinstall, but before I do, can anyone
tell me (a) what is going on ?,(b) is trashing these programs and
doing an Archive and reinstall the way to go, and (c) how can I prevent
    this happening in future?

    Thanks

    Allan

I should have mentioned in the previous posting (Mysterious software
updates interfering with appplications), that I am running OS 10.3.9.

That understanding is incorrect. You not only can install OS 9 on the machine, but you must install it in order to run programs under Classic.
What you can't do is boot OS 9 on that machine.

I believe that the new/updated applications were installed with the
10.3.9 installation. The only one that puzzles me is Appleworks. Did
you use the installer that came with the computer? If so, then that
would explain Appleworks; it came with the G5 iMac back then.

If OS9 (Classic) is installed on your machine it will be in "System
Folder" (not "System", that's OSX) at the top level of your hard drive.

I then tried an Archive and Install reinstallation of OS 10.3.9,
followed by a software update: no effect.
Classic is not installed as part of OSX. Since a G5 cannot boot a OS 9 install disk, Classic is provided as a special install on one of the
disks that came with the computer. It is not included in a retail
version of OSX. Look on your disks for "Additional Software" or
"Extras" for Classic. You run the classic installer from OSX.

Then I noticed the following problem:

When I restart, the window that comes up is the MS Office 2004 Test DriveVersion User Agreement in Swedish. (My machine is set to use

This is a known problem caused by one of the updates to iTunes. It is
caused by an extra iTunes file in HD/Library/Receipts. iTunesX.pkg
should be there. One of the other files beginning with iTunes
shouldn't. Try moving them one at time out of "Receipts" until "Repair Permissions" works. A later update to iTunes might also fix it.

I trashed two programs I recently installed (Safari Enhancer and Flip 4
Mac). This did not fix the problem.
Flip4Mac is useful. Get it from the Flip4Mac web-site (not Microsoft)
    for the current version.

Then I checked my System profile, and my applications folder, and found
that on April 15, Appleworks 6 was downloaded in fifteen different

It comes with iBooks and iMacs. It will be on the Software Restore
disks, but not the OSX install disks.

I'm thinking of scrapping Appleworks, Quicken and MS Office Test

These programs are not causing the problems. I have found Appleworks
useful, The current (and probably the last, since iWorks is here) is
6.2.9 OSX Software Update does not update Appleworks, so you have to
go to Apple's web-site to get the update.

All you need to do is fix the iTunes receipt problem, and install
Classic and the Appleworks update (if needed).
