If I hit the sleep command _immediately_ after start-up, it works.
But very soon after startup, if I hit "sleep", the screen first goes
dark and the disk seems to start spinning down, but then everything
starts up again.

What do you mean by "hit sleep"? If this involves the mouse, it may be
that you are moving the mouse just after choosing the Sleep menu item (
or whatever you are doing). This can wake the computer back up. m.

I've also found that if I put my dual 533 to sleep and then turn off my printer it comes right out of sleep. Bouncing the mouse will do it too. This is all normal. My computer sleeps very well thankyou.
