    Thanks to all who offered help.

    Tried all your suggestions. No luck. I'm just going to have to do
    without the CDs & DVDs icon in the System Preferences. When I put a CD
    on the desktop, I get a box asking how I want to handle it and that
    works.

    I'll see what happens when 10.4.7 comes out. Maybe the new OS, Leopard
    (?) will fix it.
