A quick question:

Does Mystic create/maintain any Mystic-specific files alongside each JAM base?

MYSTIC.jdt
MYSTIC.jdx
MYSTIC.jhr
MYSTIC.jlr
MYSTIC.lnk
MYSTIC.scn
MYSTIC.xlr

Im thinking about those .lnk, .scn and .xlr files?

Would it safe to let some other software operate on the JAM bases (e.g. GoldEd), or would that "destroy" something for Mystic?

Mystic does store additional information about a message base outside of JAM and I would assume anything else that uses JAM would too. The data files alone only store the message data.

Either way you can use GoldEd with Mystic. MUTIL can even export a GoldEd configuration for your message areas!

Mystic does store additional information about a message base outside of JAM and I would assume anything else that uses JAM would too. The data files alone only store the message data.

Yes, those are Mystic specific. The JAM storage are the files that have an extension that ends with .jXX and anything else with the base filename would be Mystic specific.

The Mystic-specific files store things like echomail export/areafix stuff, QWK and newscan settings, echomail export pointers, and so on.

I think you can put an "include" line into the GoldEd configuration that will load the bases directly from the file that MUTIL exports so you can automatically have everything show up in GoldEd.

Speaking of message bases and paths -- is there anything "special" with System Paths --> Message Base Path vs the Path set for each message base?

I have the Path set for each message base, and am thinking of moving them all "up" one step, from /mnt/bbs/mystic/msgs to /mnt/bbs/msgs. For each message base this would also include adjusting its Path accordingly, e.g. from /mnt/bbs/mystic/msgs/fidonet/ to /mnt/bbs/msgs/fidonet/.

Would it be "bad" to do such a move for some reason that you can think of?

My reasoning for moving them is that the message bases aren't necessarily tied entirely to Mystic (apropos GoldEd), so should live outside the /mnt/bbs/mystic directory hierarchy. Similar to the echomail inbound/outbound, the actual directories for file areas (their contents), etc.

Any thoughts on this are much appreciated. :)

No you can set the path to whatever you want.

The only thing to consider is that eventually I do want to get rid of the message base path for each specific message base, and just have the single message base path for all of the data files.

The reason for that is to simplify things if you want to move them as you're wanting to do now.

... A .GIF is worth a thousand .TXT.

OK! I'll keep the "Mystic-local" ones in one directory tree for now, and be prepared to move them alongside all the others (echomail areas).
