the Carter economic policies. Granted, he did not inherit the greatest
economy to begin with, but Lee's blaming that on the Nixon/Ford
administrations does not tell the whole story. The problem started under Johnson, whose Vietnam War overspending really hurt the US economy (except the war industry). Policies of the Federal Reserve during Johnson's
administration also did not help.

That was a popular chant on college campuses back in those days.

All wars are destructive and affect the economy. And never for the
better. However, the conflict in Vietnam was over when LBJ left office,
with the two sides having finally reached agreement. The only thing
left needing to done being for both sides to sign the peace deal.

However, as Nixon took office he decided not to sign it, his stated
reason being he wanted "peace with honor."

So what was the result?

Nixon chose to continue the conflict for an additional five years,
at a cost of tens of thousands more American lives, plus only god
knows how many hundreds of thousands of more Vietnamese lives. Then
Nixon decided to sign the same peace deal that LBJ and his Vietnamese counterpart had agreed to, thus bringing the conflict to an end.
