Nigel,
Look what is back from the dead...but for how long?
Awhile back, Kris Jones asked me if I'd like to take it over.
While I have a lot else on my plate right now, I hate to see a
message network die. But, I told him I'd need help to get it
set up, as I've never been a network coordinator.
I had sent an email awhile back, but haven't heard from him;
and was beginning to think I'd be zapping the network over here.
Yeah, I was going to nuke it at the end of the month. I'm not really interested in running a network and quite frankly, I'm not quite sure
how to do it all in sbbs :) I just don't have the spare time.
I'm going to be offline for thunderstorms on Jan. 30...as even though
the middle of winter is approaching with Groundhog Day on Tuesday, that
means tornado season is right around the corner. There was an EF-3
tornado in Fultondale, Alabama (just north of Birmingham)...then an
EF-0 tornado that hit the airport in Tallahassee, Florida...barely
missing the National Weather Service office and its Doppler Radar. The National Weather Service in North Little Rock had their radar taken out
by a lightning hit about a week ago, but it's back online now.
Ever thought of packing up and moving somewhere safter? :)
That said, pretty much any part of the US is ripe for natural disaster whether it be a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, blizzard or volcano!
We've been lucky in the Dallas area. Lots of sirens here in the past
but everything has missed us in Plano so far, touch wood. I'm not being complacent about it though. I'm a member of the Plano C.E.R.T.
(Community Emergency Response Team) setup by the city so if nothing
else, I'm somewhat prepared.

Yeah, the New Madrid Fault runs through Arkansas, and some of the
mountains may actually be volcanoes.
Rick Pinelli, KA2BSM, oversees CERT in the Memphis area, and he got me
into D-Star. The CERT D-Star Net is on Thursday, at 8:30pm Central Time,
on Reflector 58A. I used to do their nets on the first Thursday, as that
was the night they had their face to face meetings...but COVID-19 put an
end to those. That's why HamCom decided to shut it down.

Hmm, I never knew that. Let's not try to find out!
I don't have the equipment to do D-Star stuff. In fact, I can barely
reach the local repeater here. I've got a dual band HT. It took me 8
years from getting my license to actually getting the radio. I renewed
and then got my General and still have the same HT lol. I really to
pass my Extra then get something that covers all the bands so biding my time. That said, I can't really justify spending a couple of thousand
on a radio I'm likely to barely use.
