• lilo install problem

    hello,
I use a suse 7.3 distribution and had installed lilo on the mbr during installation.
But I couldn't get windows (95) to be booted first even by putting default=windows or default=hdc1
in the lilo.conf file. So I used Yast1 to setup lilo once again and by
error set it up on the boot sector of the root partition. Now windows is
the default boot but it doesn't boot right: just after the lilo screen,
    I get this error message:
    I/O error
replace it and hit a key
which probably means that I got a boot sector problem.
by using a windows boot disk, I'm able to access the windows disk,
    though.
Does somebody know how I can get windows to boot once again?
    thanks a lot in advance,
    Jacques Charroy

if the drive is your primary master,
    that would be hda1

IIRC, DOS-based Windows must be on the first partition of the first hard
drive in order to boot. You would need to have the hdd containing Windows
be hda1, and install lilo to that drive.

Try looking around the dual-boot documentation at http://linuxdocs.org.
It's been a while since I've dual-booted Linux and Windows.

Simple: uninstall Linux and run a Windows operating system only. If
you do this you'll keep Bill Gates a very happy man, and you won't
    have these problems.

thanks for your help, I used the fdisk function "make bootable" on the
windows drive and now windows boots properly (I wonder why this was necessary). I also did fdidsk /mbr so now lilo isn't there anymore and I
    got problems booting linux....
    bye
