If fixing myself, is there any way to replace the internal 3.5" drive
with some Macintosh model drive?

All it took was a screw driver and about 20 minutes to disassemble the >//c+, the //c+'s internal 3.5" drive and the external 3.5" A9MO106
drive, swap the actual drive mechanisms, re-plug-in everything, and
screw the //c+ back up. Threw away the bad drive and the A9MO106
housing.

I hope you didn't literally throw the housing away. ;-(
In many parts of the world, drives are much more plentiful than
the housing. It could be re-fitted with another 800K drive or with
a 1.4M "Superdisk" and be quite useful with the appropriate
controller.
