    A few questions:

Can a person just plug any mixture of 5.25" and 3.5" floppy drives into an Apple IIc or IIgs?

Does the IIc have to be a certain ROM version to support the unidisk?

Also, are 5.25" drives and 3.5" drives still available for sale somewhere?

    How about the RocketChip accelerator?

    Thanks,

    - Mike

The IIgs can take both and the 3.5" get connected first.

Does the IIc have to be a certain ROM version to support the unidisk?

Yes, the first version of the IIc can not take a 3.5" UniDisk without
first being modified with a rom upgrade. I forget the number of the rom,
but I do remember that jumper W1 gets cut open and W2 gets soldered
over. I just did that upgrade. Also there is a check you can do, but I also can't remember what location you have to peek. I know that a 255 in that location means the original IIc and can't take the 3.5 drive. The IIc+ is already able to take both.

Also, are 5.25" drives and 3.5" drives still available for sale somewhere?

I have half a dozen Disk II 5.25 drives and controllers, and I can get you
as many Apple 5.25 and 3.5 drives you want. UniDisk 3.5 drives are rare.
I had to bite, kick and scream to get the one I have now. Oh, and be the highest bidder. LMAO

    How about the RocketChip accelerator?

Never heard of the Rocket Accelerator. Is there another name
    for that one?

    A few questions:

    A few answers. ;-)

Can a person just plug any mixture of 5.25" and 3.5" floppy drives into an Apple IIc or IIgs?

The //c can only use Unidisk 3.5" drives, and I think can only use two
extra drives. The GS can go a little further, but I'm not sure.
Someone else could probably tell you. ;-)

Does the IIc have to be a certain ROM version to support the unidisk?

Well, it does have to be one released after a certain date. The
    earliest //cs couldn't use Unidisks.

Also, are 5.25" drives and 3.5" drives still available for sale somewhere?

There are still a few resalers out there, but they're kind of pricey.
You're best bet is to either ask on comp.sys.apple2.marketplace if
anyone has any to sell, or check Ebay.

    How about the RocketChip accelerator?

Mmmm, tricky! Again, check either the .marketplace, or Ebay.

Does the IIc have to be a certain ROM version to support the
    unidisk?

Yes it does. Go into Basic and type "PRINT PEEK (64447)" and press return. If it says 255, you need a ROM upgrade to us a 3.5" UniDisk

is it possible to upgrade the ROMs on older //c's to support the Unidisk
    3.5
or are there other changes to the machine ?

Yes, you can burn read and burn the rom from the later //c and
insert it in the earlier. I believe that peek from above should read
zero to be compatible. Check the machine you'll be taking rom
from. Also you'll need to open jumper at W1 and close the one at
W2. I think that's correct. Well switch them, whatever they are now,
make them the opposite. ;-) I did one not too awful long ago. Help
you when you're ready to do it.
