Could you send me an email (remove the NOSPAM) with some more information like
what preferences you had set and which version of Windows you are running. It
would also be a real help if you could attach a disk image with a problem DHR file on it.

FWIW, FishWings worked fine for me on HR and DHR. The main difference
between FW and CP is that CP handles half-pixel shifting for hires and
    has selectable DHR conversion modes.

I am to the understanding that Andy's CiderPress allows viewing of graphics files.

CP handles HR, DHR, and all forms of SHR except the PaintWorks format that didn't get documented anywhere I could find. CP doesn't do GIF or JPEG
because your average web browser will do a fine job. Handling MacPaint
files would probably be a nice addition.

Thanks for the feedback Andy. FishWings stores the user preferences in an ".ini" file in the FishWings directory. I recently heard (but have been unable to confirm) that Windows XP professional, by default, does not allow a program to write to a file in its own directory. If that is true it could possibly cause the problems mentioned by Michael.

For Mac OS folks mining their old Apple II Disk images, you can use
ADFS to browse to the files in question, directly on the disk image.
To view HGR and DHR files, just double click. (or get info) (first
    install a2pix, another freebie)

    ADFS:

    a2pix:

I'm sorry you are having trouble with viewing DHR files with FishWings. I tested the latest version of FishWings on Windows 95, Windows Me and
    Windows XP
Home Edition before it was released. No one has reported a problem with Windows 98 till now. Without knowing how you have your preferences set
    and
what files you are trying to view it is pretty hard to figure out what the problem is.
Are you able to view the graphics files on the disk images that come with FishWings?

No; I was trying to view the graphics files that come with FishWings when I had
    the big black rectangle problem.

The only way I am able to duplicate your problem is by setting the
    preferences
so that I am viewing the files as a hex/ASCII screen dump and then setting
    both
    text and background to black.

I can e-mail you any settings files that you think are appropriate.

Well, I've been experimenting and I just found a bug. I get the black rectangle problem if I set my number of screen colors to 256 instead of 32, 24 or 16 bit color.
Do you have the screen colors set this low? In any case this is definitely a bug in FishWings. I will try to fix it for the next version release.

    Charlie

    I'm using high (16-bit) color in 1024 x 768 mode.

Perhaps we should take the troubleshooting stage to e-mail at this point...
