    (7x9 characters) for the Videx card. It was often used for
    inverse characters to support VisiCalc, IIRC.

    Thanks, and although this is quite true, it isn't auto-detectable.
    You have to instill a keyboard command, AFAICT, to get the
    secondary character set to be implemented.

    Well, you certainly have to select the secondary font, which
    can be done with a keyboard sequence, though it is usually
    done through a software protocol.

    I believe that there was an (obscure) software protocol for
    determining whether the secondary font ROM was installed,
    as well (and maybe even reading it).
