The Punter protocal that Sam is talking about works GREAT with the old
Qmodem Terminal program... the other terms I didn't ever use it , because I >was a Qmodem user..... but I used it many, many, many times in the "old" >days to call C=ommodore BBs, and transfer "true" binary files to my old 286

I'll have to confess that I am a Qmodem user too. But, even Qmodem (for
DOS) is starting to show its age. I still use it on a 166 Mhz machine. But Z-modem is useless on a 2 Ghz machine. Guess I'll have to break down and
    try Qmodem Pro for Windows.

( my C=64 was busy running the BB's 24 - 7 at the time ) and then would
use it again to upload the files to the BBs.... ( this was before the
X-1541 cables and Star Commander and stuff ) and modem to modem was the >only way to do that stuff, cause all the stuff we use now was just being >developed and was very buggy.

Wish I had a dollar for every file I transferred modem to modem in the old days. I could take a Caribbean cruise, first class yet! ;-)

Even though the Punter (4 the PC ) protocal worked very good with Qmodem , >it still would crash sometimes. If you really want to make sure you get >EVERY bit of information when going modem-to-modem between two different OS >computers, then use Xmodem to do it..... it's slow --- it's old
fashioned --- but it is the standard protocal of all times..... and the >error checking is the best....... (thats why its so slow )

Just don't forget to strip the X-modem padding on the Commodore end. Many
C64 and C128 files won't run with the X-modem padding present. (You know
that Rick. I just added it for other readers.)

    Sam,

Contact Tim Knight ( he hangs around here too )

He has Qmodem Pro for DOS and WINDOZE already zipped and might send it
to you if you ask nice.... ( I know because he bought the old WasteLand
BBs system and it's in the data base ).... and they are ( were ??? ) "registered" versions too.

You will have no luck AT ALL with Mustang Software , trying to get
Qmodem Pro from them.... they abandon that eon's ago.

==== Which brings up another point..... see my post "don't it pee ya off
    ?"

Anyway.... contact Tim, he may have the only working copy left in the
world that is zipped and ready....

I still have the original floppies for Qpro for dos and windoze, but I
don't have a PC up that has a 5 1/4 drive that works.... but if all
    else fails , contact me....

    Rick

Thanks for the info. I think I can find it on a local BBS that runs the Windows version of Wildcat!, which was also from Mustang. Right now the BBS
is only open to Fidonet activity. I'll try it tomorrow.

Got access to a C= machine with Big Blue Reader? That would solve it, too.

still would crash sometimes. If you really want to make sure you get EVERY bit
of information when going modem-to-modem between two different OS computers , then use Xmodem to do it..... it's slow --- it's old fashioned --- but it is the

For the most universal File transfer with very high reliability, C-64
version & currently supported go with Kermit.

    Commodore 64/128 version

If you can use DOS term programs with the version of Windows you are using, the link Jim Lawless provided could be the answer to your problem:

    http://www.simtel.net/pub/msdos/commprog/

Download the file PUNTR104.ZIP as it is an external Punter protocol that can
be used with most of the old (early 90's) DOS terms that support external protocols, such as Telix, Qmodem, and ProTerm.

There is a later version of Punter for MS-DOS. Punter v2.03 http://www.censor.net/newdesign/tools/ http://www.sentry.org/~trev/opus/173files/PUNTER23.ZIP
