• The most awesome SID tune?

    Ok guys, another (stupid) poll.

Point out ONE, only ONE SID tune available on HSCV
that you think has the most awesome arrangement/richness
    of instrumentation.

    Let's see your suggestions :)

    Best regards,

Ok, out of my 754 favourite SID tunes I'd like to mention one that I believe
no one else will mention, left alone even know it: /VARIOUS/A-F/Blues_Muz/Gallefoss_Glenn/Coming_Soon.sid

It's short, it's cool, and it's as close to an accordeon as it gets. And
while you're at it, listen to the other tunes in that directory as well. ALL
    of them! :-]

The theme song for STEREOPLAYER 10. Starts out with

Tough one, as there are so many musical styles. I used to love
Wally Beben's "Tetris" score, but unfortunately the current HVSC
rip doesn't sound quite as nice (too crisp) as I remember it on
    the real computer.

One of my recent favorites on the other hand is Vincent Voois'
cover on Magical Sound Shower (Out_Run.sid), which I believe is
the most inspired cover on that particular song. I also like
    Reyn Ouwehand's X98 tune.

Oh dear. That's three songs, and I was only allowed to suggest one.

    Wow, To Be On Top!

When I was bought my first C64 I was five years old and it came with
a few tapes as a "bonus" from the shop. These tapes were mainly from
Rainbow (80 Days Around The World, To Be On Top), a very odd war
game (Tobruk) and a few more.

I was amazed by To Be On Top. It had such WONDERFUL music. I
waited the WHOLE tape loading just to hear the music. Wow, did it
make the TV sound like a disco! Wowwwwww :-) The game itself was
terribly hard to me at that time, and I still can't make out how it works, despite of being a musician (ironic, huh?)!

    Sigh, what memories...

Ok, maybe this is the one... currently it is /hvsc/HVSids-5.3/Tel_Jeroen/Supremacy.sid

...especially the ones, where you keep on searching for some musical and
    sid tricks =)

For some strange reason... Actually, I selected those tunes, because most
of them were composed by some friend of mine and not the most commonly
known ones.. makes me little jealous. I consider those are the best
choice, how could that be...? :)

Which makes me ask, has anyone ever had an old friend which occurred as a musical talent, comparing to the most composers in the HVSC base
    directory?

Go to http://www.replayer.com/sids/ and click on GENERAL SID
COLLECTION to connect to a location for downloading some SID files
including CONCRTTH.SID. Trim the last 21 bytes and chang the file
extension from .SID to .MUS to make the file compatible with
STEREOPLAYER V10.3. Although SP 10 discards the load address, the LA of
file CONCRT THEME.MUS is $7C40 while the LA of CONCRTTH.MUS is $5940.
Most of the data in the files is identical. I think the few discrepencies
in the files are changes needed for various updates in the SID PLAYER.

I don't quite understand the question. Are you asking if we know
some really great SID musician currently not featured in HVSC,
or if we know someone who in general has a great musical talent?

Although many of the SID songs are a pleasure to listen to, I'm
not entirely sure that a majority of the composers and arrangers
are musical genii, just in the same way a professional composer
doesn't automatically get the most out of the SID chip.

    Ok guys, another (stupid) poll.

Point out ONE, only ONE SID tune available on HSCV
that you think has the most awesome arrangement/richness
    of instrumentation.

    Let's see your suggestions :)

Nightdawn by Johannes Bjerregaard. I could have sworn it was song 2, but
in the newest HVSC it seems to be song 3.

Everybody who has seen a C64 demo will recognize it. :)

I don't quite understand the question. Are you asking if we know
some really great SID musician currently not featured in HVSC,
or if we know someone who in general has a great musical talent?

It might be that your old friend or a groupmate has beaten some others in
the HVSC collection ;) I guess there are always someone who is missing
in the HVSC or atleast their best pieces...

Although many of the SID songs are a pleasure to listen to, I'm
not entirely sure that a majority of the composers and arrangers
are musical genii, just in the same way a professional composer
doesn't automatically get the most out of the SID chip.

The majority of the composers could not be musically talented at all, but
you can find some pearls... It is the same with the "real music".

Btw, if you like reggae, take a listen to "Love agaist the war" by Momo...
He got a recording contract lately. www.mikseri.net

    Hehe.

Some trackers really need a lot of practice.. Do you have any samples of
    your tunes somewhere?

    Hi there :)

Only on MIDI and unplugged singing/playing on mp3. I would LOVE
to compose for the SID but I "only" know the actual good old notes
and the paper with staves... I have no idea how to input notes in a
    tracker. It looks impossible :(

Not at all! Actually the hardest thing is to make nice instrument. Entering
the notes isn't that hard anymore - you just enter them as C D E F G ... followed by the octave. Most trackers are divided into ticks of equal
length, so to make a tune sound longer, you just have to leave some ticks
    free inbetween:

    C-4
    ---
    D-4
    ---
    E-4
    ---
and so on. It isn't that hard, really. :-)

Mmm... I tried that but... where did I type that in?
I pressed the letters and nothing happened, or I was
drawn to a strange menu... argh! :(((

I know it can be confusing with the hundreds of keycombinations you have to memorize to get to the different menus.

    Is there a veryveryvery-easy tutorial? I found a C64 tracker
with a "user manual". The user manual was intended for experts.

Try this, and don't despair. :-)

If you're a PC user and would like to get started on SID without
having to "bother" with a C64 (for all values of "bother"), you
probably would like to have a look at GoatTracker, which also is
available with nice docs. I downloaded it some weeks ago and has
so far found it quite useable (and quick to get some work done).

    http://covertbitops.c64.org/tools.htm

and then scroll down to "GoatTracker 1.4b".
