Star Commander is a DOS program used in conjunction with an X1541 (or other) cable to connect your PC to a 1541 drive.

Makes it extremely easy to copy .d64 images to disk.

    Look here: http://sta.c64.org/sc.html

Everything you need to know about it is there.

Okay, it looks good, but what do you do if you do not have the X1541 cable option??

Can you copy the files to the 3 1/2 non HD disk instead??

And I am grateful for your help.

How about if I copy the files to a disk of your choosing, and then mail it to you? It can be 1541, 1571 or 1581....whichever you prefer.

That way you can get a leg up on using the files, and sort out the rest later.

I downloaded a Geos printer D64 file from Megacom software. The notice was that it was zipped with WinZip.

    So I unzipped with WinZip.

Now I can not seem to do anything with it.

The file seems to be larger than a 1541 disk will hold.

I have Lil Red Reader and have tried to put it on a 1541 disk. No go. Did
put it on a 1571 disk.

What is the trick to dealing with D64 files??

    Thanks in advance
    Harvey

Transfer the ZIPped file from your PC to your Commodore. The ZIPped
file is compressed and will likely fit on your disk. I don't
use LITTLE RED READER but if it works for you, then its OK. Next
download Commodore ZIP utilities from any number of WEB sites.
You should have both a ZIP file dissolver as well as a program for
constructing ZIPped .d64 files as well as for other disk drives
(like .d71 and .d81) I like the GUNZIP and PUZIP utilities.
Versions exist for both C128 and C64 computers, as well as dual
and single drive situations. I downloaded these files from:

    www.cs.tut.fi/~albert/Dev/

Anticipate long processing times when you Unzip
files on Commodore's. For .d64 files, the entire
disk in your target drive will be overwritten.

What you do is one of the following solutions:

    1. Use Star Commander or 64COPY to extract all the individual files from the .d64 archive file. Then, put all the files on a 3.5" 720 KB MS-DOS floppy. Then, you can use Little Red Reader to copy the files to a 1541 disk.

    2. For the second approach, you have already done a part of the job, i.e.
put the .d64 file onto a 1571 or a 1581 disk. After you have done this you
can use the C128 program D128it to extract all the files from the .d64 file.
