Which 8 bit computer titles should be updated?
I would love to see Dizzy, Rainbow Islands, St Dragon, Battle Command, Midnight Resistance, Plotting, Silkworm, SWIV, Mutants, Chase HQ and
WEC Le Mans brought bang up to date!
Well, if monkey would do a 'touch my PS2' then I'd be happy. But
otherwise, what I'd like to see is some of the games re-released on the
modern machines (Windows/Linux/*BSD including OS X), not remade.
Basically (and hear me out before you flame), a commercial MAME.
The thing that puts me off using MAME is that I'd have to break the law
to play any games on it[1]. What I'd like to see is a company gain the commercial rights to some of the older arcade ROMs, and agree to sell
licenses for MAME users to download and play them at some nominal cost.,
say a fiver. I'd feel much happier about using the ROMs if this were
the case, and wouldn't mind paying five quid to play Bubble Bobble for
months on end :-). Not only this but some company could then package a
MAME distro for a few dozen squids, containing installers for major
systems, a few ROMs, printed manual etc. and it would be easier to
configure and support would be available.
[1]I do own emulators such as FUSE, Spectaculator, T3, ElectrEm, DrEAm
etc., but in each case I (i)legally own an original box, so have a
license to use the ROM and (ii)legally own the software I use. Although
in some cases, I flout the definition of 'own', for instance I own
Outrun on the Amiga but play the Speccy version on FUSE/Spectac.
