• epson sc 740i "stopped"

I have an Epson Stylus Color 740i.[1] In the past I have been able to print to it using the driver in 10.3.9, but not I can't. Today I was able to
print to it using 9.2, but rebooting just to print it kind of a hassle.

Symptoms: After I select my settings in the print dialog box and click
print, the printer icon appears in the dock, then gets an exclamation
point in the icon. If I click on that printer icon in the dock, I see
the printer window and it says that jobs are *stopped*. I have no idea
why they are stopped, but I click start. The barber pole comes up
briefly, then it says jobs are stopped again.

    Suggestions?

[1] It matches the blue iMac. This old printer has a remarkable ability
to clean itself and print tolerably well with its four-year-old ink
cartridges. It has been unused for a few periods lasting over a year and
the ink has never dried out.

Have you tried deleting the printer driver and reinstalling? Have you done routine maintenance on OS X?

I have to say you are very fortunate! My mother has an old iMac which
she got when the 740 was about the only printer which would work with
them. Over the years I spent hours keeping that thing unclogged. It
would only stay clear if used very frequently. Perhaps I have been less fortunate than average with Epsons but all the ones I have come across
have been prone to clogging. (I recently gave my mother my cheapo Canon
and bought a new Canon for myself.)

I do maintenance regularly. This problem actually came to my attention
six months ago but I didn't need to print badly enough to post about it.

After doing some googling I thought that the driver wasn't available for downloading, so I'd need my Panther disc to reinstall the driver. It is
20 miles away though so I'll have to try it this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion!

I know I'm fortunate, that's why I posted the footnote. Everyone else complains about Epson printers. Somehow mine is exceptional. My Epson digital camera is awesome too.
