I personally thought it would have been obvious.

About fifteen years. I don't see the relevance.

It was a rethorical question. I found it amazing that you didn't foresee replies of this kind to your post. That's why I was wondering how long you

Ah, I see, insulting is all you can come up with. Well, with that attitude I doubt anybody will ask you anything about Panther. After all, there are nicer people around.

Ah Bjorn, don't tell us that you were going to post an article on one
of the most sought-after pieces of software of the Mac community and

(presumably) most of the rest of us does not.

As a matter of fact, it never crossed my mind that some would

Had I anticipated these kinds of responses, I would have posted
    to comp.sys.mac.legal-beagles.

I for one am grateful to Bjorn for posting his interesting observations
on Panther. It's one thing to worry about NDA's with respect to software
or hardware that is still a mystery. But we know Panther is coming, and
it's a certainty that Microsoft for one has a copy already, so what harm
can come from letting the rest of us know about his impressions?

If Apple has a problem with Bjorn's posting, why don't we let Apple deal
    with it?

    Thanks, Bjorn!

    David Derbes [loki@midway.uchicago.edu]

For the record, I was given the beta by a representative of Apple
and I didn't sign an NDA nor was I instructed not to discuss it although I >was asked not to distribute it (apologies to those that have sent me mail >asking for copies). I have so far found six problems (two major ones) and >chasing down bugs is why Apple distributed this beta.

How long have you been around on Usenet?

About fifteen years. I don't see the relevance.

And besides, maybe it might be that there are lots of other people
running it already on their Macs, so why the assumption that we want
to ask *you* questions about it?

My post was not made for the benefit of those who are already
running Panther. It was for those who aren't and wish to know more about
it. They might be interested in asking me questions because I indicated
I was running it. Asking questions of someone who isn't running it would
    be pointless.

Are you really this dense? I may have been the first person in
history to over estimate the intelligence of Mac users.

Note: If anyone is running Panther on a dual G4 Power Mac (gigabit),
please send me email. There are some problems I've experienced
and I'm curious if you are experiencing them too.

Because it's still a developer preview. Some things will change between
now and the final release. A guy with a preview copy says, "Panther is
a crummy OS because they broke foo, bar is ugly, and they still haven't
put baz in like you had in 8.5."

Joe Sackodonuts reads this and says, "That friggin' Apple. What a
buncha bozos. No way I'm paying $129 for another public beta."

That's the harm. Same reason they didn't like developer seeds of Safari
being leaked to the general public.

I don't buy it. We all know that this is early release stuff, and we all
know there will be bugs in such that will be killed by the time of the
    GM.

    Safari is one thing: a small download, an easy install, an application;
Panther is quite another. It's easy to see that wide distribution of
a buggy Safari could lead to bad press. I do not believe that there is
a wide distribution of Panther, and that most who have it are professional. What was there in Bjorn's post that would lead to the sort of "damage"
    you describe?

Naah. Anyone with enough brains to stay in business
long for two or more releases of an operating system
KNOWS that something like that WILL be leaked no matter
how many agreements they wrap it in or how many lawyers
    they escort it with.
